History

Thomas [Tucker] Murray learned about the Industrial Gas business from his father-in-law, Richard P. Wilson, as a fourth-generation business named Wilson & Stokes, located in Trenton, New Jersey. On April 1, 1986, Tucker ventured out to open Liberty Industrial Gas & Welding Supply at 20th Street, Sunset Park, Brooklyn. In 1992, Tucker moved the growing business to its present location, 600 Smith Street, Brooklyn. In addition to the industrial gas distribution center, Tucker opened an adjacent 1900-square-foot store to meet all of his customers’ welding supply needs. The first annual open house was held in 1996, with significant vendors spending the day answering customers’ questions and teaching customers special welding techniques. Of Tucker’s four Children, his youngest, Ashley, joined Liberty in 2002 to learn the business. Ashley ran the day-to-day operations, working with her father until his untimely death on March 9th, 2007. Ashley M. Murray took over the reins of Liberty Industrial Gases as President while ownership transferred to her Mother, Gail W. Murray.
